Andy Robertson has head in hands after Liverpool star suffers worrying injury

Andy Robertson limped off following a painful-looking injury to his ankle during Scotland’s friendly against Northern Ireland on Tuesday night, just days before Liverpool play Brighton

Liverpool have been handed a fresh injury concern after Andy Robertson was forced off injured while playing for Scotland.

Robertson captained the Scots in their friendly against Northern Ireland at Hampden Park on Tuesday night, but his evening did not go to plan.

He appeared to injure his left ankle in a challenge with Sunderland full-back Trai Hume in the 30th minute and was visibly in pain.

He tried to stay on – and was on the pitch to witness his Liverpool team-mate Conor Bradley put Northern Ireland in front with a deflected strike. But Robertson went down again minutes later and looked distraught as he sat on the pitch.

The 30-year-old left-back was assessed by Scotland’s medical staff and had to be helped off the field in the 37th minute. As he went, he put his head in his hands and pulled up his shirt to hide his face. It was a very worrying moment for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who cannot afford more injuries in the race for the Premier League title.

“He’s just come off the pitch. Let’s let the injury take its course. He’ll go back to his club and they’ll assess him,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke said post-match. “Hopefully it’s not too serious.” Liverpool currently have nine players out injured, with Joel Matip, Alisson Becker, Stefan Bajcetic, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Thiago Alcantara and Darwin Nunez struggling with problems of varying levels of severity.

Robertson himself has only played 20 matches for Liverpool this season due to a shoulder injury, which kept him out from October to January. He has been protected of late, with Klopp playing Joe Gomez at left-back to ease Robertson back into action, only for injury to strike on international duty.

Liverpool play Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday, hoping to take advantage of whatever result comes when Manchester City host Arsenal. The Reds are second in the league, behind Arsenal on goal difference, with 10 matches remaining.

Robertson’s injury comes days after he called for raised standards for Scotland ahead of Euro 2024. Steve Clarke’s side were thrashed 4-0 by the Netherlands over the weekend, sparking an impassioned rant from Robertson.

“Anger, disappointment. You can’t come away to these big teams and play the way we did. We can take a lot of heart from 60-70 minutes but the fact that we can away from that game 4-0 is is unbelievable,” he told Viaplay.

“It’s impossible for that to happens. We need to have a look at it. We can’t keep going into our old ways against the big teams. The last couple of games we have shipped quite a lot of goals and that is not what we are based on. We are based on clean sheets. In our first five qualifiers we conceded one goal and that is why we have a summer to look forward to, and we have to get back to that real quick. You can’t play like that and have four goals conceded.”
