Luis Diaz’s dad says they haven’t given up ‘hope’ over Liverpool star’s next move

Liverpool won the race to sign Luis Diaz from Porto in January 2022, but the Colombia international could yet find himself on the move again further down the line

Mane Diaz, father of Liverpool forward Luis, says he and his family haven’t given up hope of the Colombia international making an eventual move to Spain.

Liverpool’s number seven joined the club from Porto midway through the 2021-22 season, helping the Reds reach the Champions League final months later.

The Merseyside club are in no rush to sell, with the South American under contract until 2027, but his father remains alert to the possibility of interest from Spain.

Diaz, who missed a chunk of last season through injury, has played his part this term as Jurgen Klopp looks to add more trophies in his final season in charge. He has stepped up with Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah both missing matches, though the latter is now back in action.

In 39 matches this season, Diaz has scored 11 goals and added a further five assists. Three of each have come in the Reds’ last seven league outings, and it might not be the biggest surprise to see interest from overseas in the summer.

“There was never anything serious with Real Madrid or Atlético [in 2022],” Mane Diaz told Cadena Ser (via The Sun). “Liverpool were always more determined and concrete to sign Luis.

“We haven’t lost our hope yet…” he added. “Luis is playing well and Spanish clubs are always active in the market.” However, it remains to be seen whether Real Madrid add further attacking reinforcements with a deal for Kylian Mbappe all-but official.

Paris Saint-Germain are already preparing for life without Mbappe, who is out of contract in the summer. Los Blancos are understood to have a deal in place, with both clubs waiting until they can no longer face each other in the Champions League before an announcement is made.

Diaz, who started the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, has been in action for his country during the internatioanl break but Liverpool will hope he can return against Brighton on Sunday. He captained Colombia as they beat Spain 1-0 at the London Stadium on Friday, before playing 66 minutes in a victory over Romania.

Going into the break, Klopp was concerned about Diaz and a number of his colleagues. The winger made way shortly before the end of the United clash, but was fit enough to represent his country.

“Now the boys go on international duty, we hope they come back healthy,” Klopp told reporters. “Lucho [Diaz] felt his groin, Darwin hamstring. Cody twisted his ankle. They play again in four or five days, it’s crazy. Hopefully we will finish the season in style. I really feel for our people.”
