Liverpool handed Andy Robertson boost as Alisson and Trent Alexander-Arnold set return dates

Liverpool feared the worst when Andy Robertson hobbled off in midweek but the full-back’s injury issue is only minor and he will be in contention to play sooner than the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold

Andy Robertson will be out for days rather than weeks after he avoided serious injury in what is a major boost for Liverpool.

The Reds full-back picked up an issue whilst he was away with Scotland but, despite initial fears, Robertson will not endure a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Scan results on his ankle showed there was no bone or ligament damage after he limped off late in the first half at Hampden Park on Tuesday as the Scots lost to Northern Ireland.

This weekend’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield could still come too soon, but if he misses that he will almost certainly be in contention for the midweek game with Sheffield United just days later, reports the Athletic. Jurgen Klopp will also hope to welcome back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who hasn’t played since February 10 due to a knee injury. The hybrid right-back has been ramping up his rehab whilst he had the international break, but is still not ready to resume training.

Liverpool could welcome him back in a fortnight but they’ll be keen to manage his workload after issues earlier this season. Alexander-Arnold returned early from a ligament problem in January and quickly suffered another injury, which has since kept him out. The current target return date for the club’s vice-captain is first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Atalanta on April 11 or the league game against Crystal Palace three days later.

Alisson meanwhile, who has been out since February, is looking to return in mid-April. Caoimhín Kelleher has deputised impressively for the Reds but, as we hit the business end of the season, Liverpool will want all their big hitters available to them once again. The Merseysiders have been left to stew on the FA Cup defeat at Manchester United, which was their last outing before the international break. Klopp’s side led in extra-time but eventually lost to a last minute strike from Amad Diallo, which ended their quadruple hopes.

The Reds have already claimed the Carabao Cup and sit second in the league, only on goal difference. They’re also the favourites to claim the Europa League as the team look to send Klopp out on a high. The German will depart in the summer and, in his final campaign, has had to deal with a raft of injuries to key players.
