Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk explains Jurgen Klopp exit as ‘dark horse’ tipped to replace him

Liverpool are hoping to win both the Premier League and Europa League this season in order to give manager Jurgen Klopp a fitting farewell after he announced he will be leaving in the summer.

Liverpool have already won the Carabao Cup this season and they also remain in with a chance of winning the Premier League and the Europa League.

The Reds are desperate to give Jurgen Klopp a fitting farewell as he is set to step down as manager at the end of the campaign and they currently sit top of the league following their 2-1 win over Brighton and Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City at the weekend.

They are also preparing for a Europa League quarter-final clash against Atalanta later this month.

Van Dijk on Klopp’s exit
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted he is “dreading” the day Klopp leaves, with the defender preparing for an emotional farewell.

“I’m a very emotional person and I don’t like to say goodbyes,” he told ITV News. “Being the captain now, it’s gonna be horrible in the sense you probably have to speak a little bit. And like I say that day I’ll be dreading. It makes it a lot easier if we have success.

“So that’s the aim at the moment. But it’s difficult and it’s not only the boss who is leaving, it’s going to be a lot of changes and more staff leaving, but it will be a tough day, but until the day that we’ll fight and be positive and put all our focus into that to be positive, and put all of our focus and effort in that and make the season successful.”

‘Dark horse’ tipped to replace Klopp
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has been suggested as a “dark horse” candidate to become the next Liverpool manager by Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

McKenna has impressed since taking charge of Ipswich in 2021 and when asked if he is destined to manage in the Premier League one day, MacAntony told talkSPORT: “Yeah, I was being laughed out of the studio by [producer] Luke – a Liverpool fan – this morning, as an outside dark horse (to succeed Klopp).

“I love his brand of football. I’ve been watching him since last year in League One and what he’s done. You can say that Ipswich are a big club, but they didn’t go out and spend mega-millions in the summer. They kept a large part of the squad and the team from League One and they’re top of the Championship with five or six games to go, it’s incredible really.”

Pires wants Mbappe to join Liverpool
Arsenal legend Robert Pires has revealed he would like to see Kylian Mbappe snub a move to Real Madrid and join Liverpool instead.

“I’m sorry Kylian, you weren’t the first to say no to Real Madrid,” Pires told Media Carre. “I don’t know what decision he will make, but I rejected Real because I had two other options. Surely if I didn’t have Arsenal and Juve, I would have gone straight to Real. That is sure.

“I would like to see him at Liverpool. It’s a great club, family, good structure, no pressure, calm fans… And I tell myself that Mbappe and [Mohamed] Salah could be quite explosive. I think he is capable of rejecting Real Madrid.”
