With just ten minutes left on the clock, former Manchester United player Wout Weghorst emerged from the bench and, within two minutes, fired in the decisive goal to put Holland 2-1 up.

The Dutch unleashed a barrage of 20 shots during the game, their most in a major tournament since facing Costa Rica in 2014, though only three found the target.

Poland’s skipper Piotr Zielinski made way late on, handing the armband to goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny as they sought an equalizer.

Weghorst’s match-winning goal, his seventh in his last 11 international appearances, sparked scenes of jubilation among the Oranje faithful at the Volksparkstadion.

Despite late substitutions by Poland, including defensive reshuffles, they couldn’t muster a late comeback against a resilient Dutch side.

Cody Gakpo scores for the Netherlands

This victory propels the Netherlands to the top of Group D, setting the stage for crucial clashes with France, Austria, and a rematch with Poland as they aim to progress in the tournament.
