As Portugal, who had already qualified for the tournament, lost 2-0 to Georgia on Wednesday to end their Euro 2024 group stage, Diogo Jota made an appearance off the bench.
The forward replaced the winners of Group F in the 75th minute as they were defeated in Gelsenkirchen by goals from Georges Mikautadze and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Jota played quite well, completing 90% of her passes with accuracy, creating one chance, touching the ball 11 times, and touching the opposition box twice.
Minute 90+2, Conceicao attempted an awkward cross, but Ramos and Jota both failed to capitalise on an open goal.
Ronaldo’s effort was not enough to bring a goal. In the match, Georgia defended very disciplined. Portugal’s number 7 even received a yellow card in the first half for a reactionary error, after he fell in the penalty area due to his shirt being pulled by a Georgia player.
The 39-year-old striker ended the group stage without scoring any goals, so he could not extend his record of 15 goals at EURO.
Results also meant Dominik Szoboszlai’s Hungary did not qualify for the knockouts as a best third-placed team.
Jota will be one of seven Liverpool players involved in the last 16, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate.
