Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are reportedly gearing up to compete for Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz in the summer of 2025. The 21-year-old had an outstanding 2023-24 season with Leverkusen, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Wirtz has also been a crucial player for Germany in Euro 2024, scoring against Scotland in the opening match on June 14.
Valued at £110 million by transfermarkt, Wirtz is under contract with Xabi Alonso’s team until June 2027. Despite some speculation, it is highly unlikely that he will leave during this summer’s transfer window. However, a move next year seems probable, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are expected to compete for his signature.
Bayern and Real Madrid are set to battle for Wirtz, although Barcelona is also interested. However, it remains uncertain if the Catalan club has the financial resources to secure his signature. Wirtz has tallied 41 goals and 50 assists in 152 appearances for Leverkusen, including 25 goals and 34 assists in 109 Bundesliga matches.
Earlier this year, Wirtz’s representative and father emphasized that Alonso is the ideal manager for him at this stage of his career. “Florian has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027,” Hans-Joachim Wirtz told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger. “That is roughly how long he will stay at Leverkusen. There’s no answer to what will happen when. We should wait for the next two years and then we’ll see what happens. Florian is very lucky to have Xabi Alonso, who brings a lot of qualities. He has a great relationship with the whole team. It’s the right coach at the right time.”
Attacking midfielders who can both score and assist goals are rare, making it no surprise that top clubs are interested in Wirtz. His form last season was exceptional, with 11 goals and 12 assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances, and four goals and four assists in 11 Europa League matches. Additionally, he scored three times and provided four assists in six German Cup appearances. His skills in scoring, assisting, and game intelligence make him one of the most sought-after players in world football if he were to move next summer.
Real Madrid are reportedly confident in their ability to lure Wirtz to Bernabeu, while Bayern Munich appears to be catching up. A move this summer is unlikely as Wirtz is set to play in the Champions League next season and could enter the 2024-25 campaign following a potential European Championship triumph with Germany.
