Darwin Nunez scored a late winner as Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground, with manager Jurgen Klopp revealing a chant from the home fans fired up his striker
Jurgen Klopp claimed last-gasp hero Darwin Nunez was fired up by abusive chants from Nottingham Forest fans as Liverpool opened up a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Nunez headed in a 99th minute winner after coming on during the second half of a controversial clash at the City Ground. And the home supporters taunted the Uruguayan by singing: “You’re just a s*** Andy Carroll.”
“It was a great response to the song,” smiled Klopp. “They can sing it more often.” But even Klopp admitted Liverpool’s current winning run is defying logic as they continue to defy an injury crisis.
He said: “That was super special. If you’d told me 12 days ago we would win all four games coming up, I would have said no chance, it was impossible. How we have four wins, I can’t believe.
“Next Sunday (against Manchester City at Anfield) would be a massive game anyway but before that, we play a difficult game in Prague. We have to keep going, recover.”
Klopp admitted it had been a difficult day for his side but paid special tribute to Nunez and to Alexis Mac Allister, who came up with the crucial assist.
The Liverpool boss went on: “In the last second, the guy who looks like a former Liverpool player thought ‘I’ll score a goal and decide the game’. The goal was set up by a guy (Mac Allister) who was the calmest on the whole pitch.

“I saw it only live but I’ll never forget it. Super assist and super important goal. In the circumstances, winning these games is ridiculous. It’s pretty special what the boys did.”
Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, meanwhile, was left “frustrated” and “disappointed” with the result but refused to criticise the officials. “I don’t want to talk about the referee, sorry. We are frustrated, we are disappointed, we are sad,” he said.
“We did a good job and the City Ground, as always, was amazing for us. The disappointment is not giving the supporters what they deserve. It was good. We created moments and clear situations. The boys did really well. We are sad, it will take a while.”
