Jurgen Klopp is surprised by how the narrative has changed surrounding Liverpool’s Premier League title chances given they weren’t tipped to compete at the start of the season
Jurgen Klopp admits he “doesn’t understand” how Liverpool now have everything to lose in the Premier League title race – despite being seen as outsiders by many at the start of the season.
The Reds sit second after dropping two points at Manchester United last time out, but remain firmly in the three-way battle for the title. Jurgen Klopp’s outfit have been in the mix for much of the campaign, losing just twice as they recover impressively from last season.
Liverpool missed out on the top four and many felt as though the Reds were in need of an overhaul if they were to be challengers again.

Klopp bought in the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister in the summer with the Merseysiders quickly returning to the heights of recent times.
Klopp could land the second title of his tenure and doesn’t understand how the narrative around them has changed. Ahead of the club’s Europa League clash with Atalanta on Thursday night, he told TNT Sports: “At the start of 2023-24 season, nobody saw us as title contender for the Premier League. But now we’re told we have everything to lose. I don’t understand it.”
Liverpool have been in the top three since November but many envisaged Arsenal being Manchester City’s closest challengers. Manchester United were also tipped to improve, but they themselves have endured a poor campaign.
Klopp could yet leave Anfield with three trophies in his final year. The Carabao Cup has already been claimed at Wembley and, along with their bid to secure the top-flight title, the Reds are also in the running for Europa League glory. Having said that, the Reds suffered a shock 3-0 defeat in the first leg of their quarter-final tie with Atalanta on Thursday night and have a mountain to climb in their bid to reach the last four.
Liverpool have finished second twice during Klopp’s tenure, which is where they currently find themselves. Speaking after Sunday’s draw at Old Trafford the German insisted he was content with their situation as they prepare for the final six games of the season.

He said: “We are who we are, we are how we are and that is why we are in the race and I am absolutely fine with that. I knew it would be super tricky until the end. That’s all. Again, until yesterday, we were top of the table and now it is Arsenal.

“We want to be there after 38 [games], after the last matchday. It’s always better to be there the whole time and get some distance between you [and the other teams]. We are fine with our situation. I wish we would have more points, but I am absolutely fine – and I am actually over the moon.”
