Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp delights staff and customers at Cornwall restaurant with surprise visit

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has taken some time away from work during the international break with his family, and surprised locals at a seafood restaurant in Cornwall on Tuesday night

Jurgen Klopp stunned staff at a seafood restaurant with a surprise visit after his FA Cup loss.

The Liverpool boss – who will leave Anfield at the end of the season – was away in Cornwall with his family and shocked diners at a local eatery for dinner and drinks on Tuesday evening.

It came just two days after his team lost 4-3 to Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-final thriller at Old Trafford.

Locals and staff at The Mote Seafood Restaurant and Bar in Port Isaac were delighted with the visit, as “queues of kids were waiting outside the restaurant” to speak to the outgoing Kop boss. They described the highly regarded football manager as a “lovely” man with “the nicest” family.

The Liverpool manager made it known to everyone that he was very happy to chat with fans and pose for pictures. The restaurant’s 18-year-old kitchen porter was particularly excited so introduced himself and asked for a picture.

Despite not making a reservation at the restaurant, Klopp and 10 members of his family and friends decided to eat and drink.

Lindsey McAsey, general manager said: “It gave everyone a real boost for the season – you don’t expect that to happen on wet Tuesday evening!

“Klopp was wondering around the harbour in a big group of 11 – with his son, grandchild, wife and other family members – and wanted to find somewhere to eat – so they chose us! We thought they were coming in for a drink but said they wanted to eat too.

“We haven’t been that busy in general but by coincidence we were busy that night – but we obviously wanted to get them in!”

Lindsey admits a significant part of the evening for her was how “appreciative” and down-to-earth the family were. She explained: “They were so ordinary and super appreciative that they got in somewhere, and were really chatty.

“They could see I hadn’t staffed for that busy a night and Klopp’s wife was helping bring the dirty plates to the table.

“My hubby said we’ll give you a job and she said I’d love to work here! How lovely.”

The general manager, whose son (a Man City supporter) and girlfriend came down to get a picture with Klopp too, said the staff treated him ‘normally’ – apart from “queues of kids outside wanting his autograph”.

She said: “He was more than happy and just said it was part of his job! Wow. He had kids constantly coming in whilst he was trying to eat but the fact he didn’t mind was incredible really.”

Lindsey added there was a humorous interaction with one of the diners: “One lady thought he was a lookalike, so said oh your teeth are much better than the real one!

“She went upstairs to eat and was informed he was the real deal, so swiftly came back down and said I’m so so sorry. He found it hilarious!”
