Liverpool have three players in mind should their pursuit of Anthony Gordon end, according to reports.
Liverpool have been well-publicised in their attempt to sign Anthony Gordon this summer. However, it doesn’t feel too likely to happen at this stage after the Reds fell well short of Newcastle United’s asking price.
Of course, Liverpool is very aware that it’ll be a difficult transfer to pull off. Newcastle isn’t desperately trying to avoid a PSR points deduction, for one thing, and don’t really need to sell.
So, for that reason, the Reds have drawn up a small list of three potential alternatives. They’re not the most surprising names in world, either.
Caughtoffside claims Eberechi Eze, Mohammed Kudus and Nico Williams are all options if Gordon remains at Newcastle. The trio have all caught the eye over the last 12 months, while Williams is currently shining at Euro 2024.
Liverpool, it seems, would like to bring one of them to Anfield – if Gordon is well and truly off the table.
Liverpool wants a winger
This does bring about more questions, admittedly. For one, do Liverpool actually have room for a new winger?
They almost certainly do on the right, where Mohamed Salah is the only natural option. On the left, however (where all of these players operate), they’ve got Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez as options. The latter two may be better through the middle but the former two are both absolutely natural from the left.
Gordon carries extra benefits in being a homegrown player, as well as a boyhood fan. Eze would also count as homegrown – so swapping someone out for one of the pair does make some sense.
But we’re still talking about an awful lot of money to fix a problem that isn’t really there.
