It is said that AL-NASSR wants to make Virgil van Dijk the “highest-paid defender in the world” as they plan a stunning move to get him.
The Dutch defender will be 33 years old next month, and his £220,000-a-week deal is coming to an end.
He has been at Anfield since 2018 and has helped the Reds win everything while Jurgen Klopp was in charge.
This summer, though, everything changed at Liverpool. The German manager left, and Arne Slot took his place.
After hearing that Klopp was leaving earlier this year, Van Dijk raised questions about his future. Now, as he gets ready to start Euro 2024 with Holland, there are even more questions.
Marca says that Al-Nassr, who have Cristiano Ronaldo up front, have already talked about a shock move to sign a player.
The Spanish newspaper says that on Tuesday, their general director met with Van Dijk’s agent.
He also showed a job offer that “would make the Dutchman the highest-paid defender in the world.”
They tried to put him in the back with Aymeric Lapore, a Spanish player.
The 30-year-old almost won the Premier League title with Van Dijk and Liverpool during his five years at Man City before moving to Saudi Arabia in August of last year.
Al-Nassr wants to become the most powerful group in Saudi Arabia and is planning to make some big moves this summer.
They already have the likes of ex-Arsenal goalie David Ospina, former Man Utd full-back Alex Telles and Van Dijk’s old Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane in attack.
But even those talents, who are managed by Portuguese coach Luis Castro, could not stop the club from finishing second in the Saudi Pro League.
They trailed title winners Al-Hilal by a whopping 14 points and then lost to their rivals on penalties in the King Cup of Champions final.
Now they want Van Dijk to come in and help to bridge that gap as well as another “big” signing.
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, 34, has been at Juventus for the past seven seasons.
But Szczesny’s contract has just a year left to run and he looks set to be sold as Juventus ring the changes.
And we reported this week how the Pole was set to join Al-Nassr in a £15m move.
