Virgil van Dijk talk to young Everton fan – ‘It’s going to be another tough year for you’

Virgil van Dijk didn’t hold any punches when he found out he was being interviewed by a young Everton fan.

Liverpool’s U8s quiz Virgil van Dijk on being ‘best’ defender

Virgil van Dijk is fully immersed in the Liverpool-Everton rivalry, even taking a cheeky pop at a young Toffees fan in a video which has gone viral.

Merseyside has always been red or blue, with football players for each team finding out quickly how deep the support runs throughout the area.

Everton haven’t had much joy of late with Liverpool’s recent success in winning the Champions League and their battle at the top of the table.

Van Dijk has been the spearhead for Liverpool’s impressive performances over the past 18 months.

He has established himself as a fan favourite among Liverpool supporters, but understandably the centre-back isn’t as popular on the other side of Merseyside.

Appearing in the popular ‘Kop kids’ video, Van Dijk was being asked questions by a number of young football fans, predominantly Liverpool supporters.

But there was one young Evertonian who seemed less than impressed with the UEFA men’s player of the year.

Van Dijk was initially asked by the Liverpool supporter: “How happy were you when you won the Champions League?”

The Holland international responded by saying he was “very happy” before turning to the other kid to ask whether he was happy as well, only to get a straight “no” as his reply.

Van Dijk quickly cottoned on that the young boy in fact supports Everton and got in a cheeky little dig.

“It’s tough isn’t it,” he said with a smile.

“It must be very tough.”

And at the end of the video, Van Dijk got one final jibe in when saying goodbye.

“Good luck. It’s going to be a tough year for you again,” he said.

Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes for Holland on Thursday when they survived a scare against Northern Ireland.

Josh Magennis had given the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute, with Memphis Depay equalising five minutes later.

But two goals in stoppage time from Luuk de Jong and a second for Depay made sure of the three points.
