Jurgen Klopp is hopeful none of his Liverpool players will pick up injuries on international duty, with 20 Reds all set to feature for their national teams this month
Twenty Liverpool players have jetted off on international duty this month and manager Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for them to avoid suffering fresh injury blows while they are away.
Liverpool have suffered an injury crisis in recent weeks, with Klopp bemoaning the fact that Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo all picked up knocks in their FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester United.
“Now the boys go on international duty, we hope they come back healthy,” Klopp told ITV after the game. “Lucho [Diaz] felt his groin, Darwin hamstring. Cody twisted his ankle.
They play again in four or five days, it’s crazy. Hopefully we will finish the season in style. I really feel for our people.”
Nunez has subsequently pulled out of Uruguay’s squad for their upcoming friendlies against the Basque Country and Ivory Coast, but Diaz and Gakpo have both linked up with their national teams.
The likes of Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip all missed the United game through injury. However, both Konate and Jones could be back for Liverpool’s next game against Brighton.
Konate has been named in France’s squad for their friendlies against Germany and Chile, while Gakpo has been joined by Virgil van Dijk in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad. They are set to host Andy Robertson’s Scotland on Friday, before facing Germany on Tuesday.
Diaz’s Colombia take on Spain and Romania, with the first of those matches played at West Ham’s London Stadium on Friday, while Wataru Endo will be in action for Japan as they face North Korea in two 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Joe Gomez has been called up by England for the first time since 2020 for their friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, while Dominik Szoboszlai will captain Hungary against Turkey and Kosovo.
Kostas Tsimikas will feature for Greece as they hope to reach Euro 2024, with a play-off semi-final match against Kazakhstan set to take place on Thursday followed by a potential clash against either Georgia or Luxembourg in the final next Tuesday.
